How to BBQ Tri-tip steak on Traeger Grill

If you are looking for a dish that’s great for intimate parties, small get-togethers and special dinner nights with loved ones, then BBQ tri-tip steak will be right up your alley. To make this dish, all you’d need is some good quality tri-tip (about 2 pounds), salt and pepper, garlic and some BBQ rub.

Preparing the BBQ Tri-Tip

  1. Preheat your Traeger grill. Set the temperature to 400°F/204°C and close the lid for about 15 to 20 minutes. If this function is available in your grill, you can also use Super Smoke for maximum taste.
  2. As you wait for the grill to heat up, get your tri-tip and trim the silver skin. Remember to keep a good amount of fat to help keep the meat from getting too dry later on.
  3. Using a sharp knife, cut small slits on top of the roast and stuff the slits with slices of garlic.
  4. In a small bowl, combine all the other dry ingredients: salt, pepper and BBQ. Once fully combined, rub the mixture all over the tri-tip and refrigerate it for at least an hour. If you have a lot of time in your hands, you can leave the tri-tip in the fridge for 24 hours and only preheat the grill when you are ready to cook.
  5. Go back to your preheated grill and reduce its temperature to 225°F/107°C
  6. Place the meat directly on the grill grate for 5 to 10 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the meat. This step is done to sear the meat and lock in the juices.
  7. Turn the grill down and continue to cook the meat for another 25 to 30 minutes. Try not to flip the tri-tip too much. To check for doneness, use the MeatStick to determine the tri-tip internal temperature. For medium-rare, the thermometer should read at least 145°F/62°C.
  8. Let the meat stand, covered loosely with aluminum foil, for five minutes before slicing.

Making A Side Dish

If you want to take your tri-tip BBQ dish to the next level, you can pair it with one-pot smoked almond and herb couscous. What’s great about this dish is that it can be done using only one simple kitchen gadget: the rice cooker.

We Know Rice noted that much of the rice cookers in the market, nowadays, have a variety of functions that allow them to double as multi-cookers, steamers, slow cookers and electric pressure cookers.

Certain brands like Aroma even have models that have specific buttons for various types of grain like white rice and brown rice. To make this filling side dish, the ingredients you would need are olive oil, minced garlic, sliced almonds, smoked paprika, couscous, chopped fresh parsley and salt.

Following The Kitchn’s recipe, the next thing you have to do is lightly saute the almonds, garlic and paprika in olive oil. Then, add in 2 ¼ cups of water and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiling you can then unplug your rice cooker and immediately stir in the couscous and salt. Close the rice cooker and let it stand until the couscous absorbs all the liquid. Fluff the couscous with a fork, mix in the parsley and serve with your steak.
