The MeatStick ReviewThe unit looks well put together, simple and fairly well robust. Looked forward to using it which may have led to my first issue. I inserted batteries into the charging station, downloaded the app and was ready to go. Firmware update pops up, which was expected and it proceeded to update the firmware. Seemed to be stuck in a loop and did multiple updates, with a few unsuccessful attempts or errors. While it didn’t state that the unit should be fully charged, one should let the unit charge and not do what I did. Once it was fully charged, the update occurred seamlessly and it paired up with no issues. No issues with the app and I found it extremely helpful and easy to use. Basically, select your cut of meat and cooking style and follow the instructions for the cook. Bit of background, I have used a Weber Igrill and also the main competitor to the Meatstick. The Igrill works well with the Komodo oven but one can’t use it in the rotisserie as the probes aren’t wireless. The main competitor’s wireless probe only works if the app/device is beside the BBQ/Komodo oven and range is/was nonexistent. Currently using it for an indoor meat thermometer but range is still limited to less than 10ft. All the apps are fairly equivalent in functionality, ease to set up and use. One issue that I am not a fan of is that the app requires you to allow access to your location all the time as opposed to only when using the app. I kept receiving warnings from the app when it is set to “only when” using it that or a security alert when it is set to what the app requires. I do not see the need for the app to have location access all the time. First try at a smoke, some connection issues as the probe would drop the signal and after a couple of reconnects, it stayed connected. Big difference so far is that the probe stays connected about 50 feet away using a Komodo style oven. Previous wireless probe I used had a range of a few feet or had to be beside the oven at all times. Over the smoking period, the probe lost connection a couple times. The app reconnected at the same place and nothing about the current cook was lost. Overall, the total smoking time was 15 hours. The estimated time remaining seemed to be short and it readjusted multiple times. Not sure if it takes the stall into account and once, I was by the stall, the estimated time remaining was much more accurate. A great feature is that the app makes the target temperature easy to adjust and you can adjust to your personal taste. In my cook, I lowered the target temperature and the brisket was super moist. Have used The Meatstick both on the BBQ and Komodo oven and has worked well for both styles. The Meatstick worked great, was easy to use and any issues were easy to overcome. Finally have a temperature probe that has the range and works as promised. Would and already have recommended this probe to people and it is a great tool to have for any outdoor cooking.
