Iâm sold on wireless meat thermometers. They work great and are easier to use than traditional âwiredâ probes. The two I have used allow excellent cooking control via a phone app. Iâve used a Meater probe for several years now and was anxious to compare it to the MeatStick probe. The set I got was the BBQ and Kitchen set. If I had my choice, I think Iâd get the one that includes the WiFi Bridge. I suspect Iâll be ordering one of those from MeatStick soon. The kit also comes with a nice carrying case that houses all the necessary parts, and has space for the WiFi Bridge if you get that as well. The kit included two probes, one regular MeatStick and a MeatStick Mini X. The X signifies a wireless repeater that rebroadcasts the signal for greater distances (they claim up to 260 feet). The regular stick has sensors to read both the internal meat temperature as well as the ambient temperature (the air surrounding the meat). The Mini only checks the internal temperature. One huge plus is the ability to operate 8 individual probes at the same time. (The Meater can run up to 4). They claim that the probes are dishwasher safe â Iâm not sure how to keep them safely in the dishwasher without getting thrown about by the water, but it speaks to how durable they are. They also claim that these probes will operate safely in either a deep fryer or air fryer. We did use it in an air fryer with great results (see below). The setup was somewhat confusing, particularly since I tried to connect two probes at once and the identifier for each probe was difficult to figure out. I strongly recommend that you watch tutorial videos on their web site. Operating it is pretty straightforward. One difference is that you have to push the button on the receiver to operate it, or even just to charge it. They do warn you not to allow cooking flare-ups to damage the probes. They are protected up to 572 degrees, but a flare-up could go much hotter. The phone app seems more complex than Meaterâs with more meat types and options, and it also included a Quick Start mode which simplifies the cook. Meaterâs app is easy to use and better informs on status of cook at each moment (shows target, internal and ambient temp â MeatStick does not include target). Both are more than just OK for controlling a cook. Iâm quite pleased with the results of my first test cook. In this case, we decided to cook a 3 pound spoon roast in our Air Fryer. In this case, we tested the MeatStick side-by-side with a Meater probe (the regular one, not the âplusâ). Cooking a spoon roast would traditionally take 2-3 hours and 325 degrees in a conventional oven. In this case it took just over an hour to get an almost-perfect medium-rare result. This is where we got very different results on our two probes. The probes got very different temperature readings. The Air Fryer was set for 325 degrees. The MeatStick showed the ambient temperature as 361 degrees. The Meater probe showed an ambient temperature of 304 degree. Judging as to how well done the exterior of the roast looked Iâm assuming the temperature was closer to 361. When done, the MeatStick read an internal temperature of 135 (Target temperature) while the Meater read 111 degrees. If weâd used the Meater to judge our cook, weâd have ruined the roast. Iâm wondering if the use of the Air Fryer threw the Meater off â frankly we have had good results in all the time weâve used it in a conventional oven. That being said, in this case, the MeatStick was far more accurate. Knowing now that the MeatStick probe was more accurate than the Air Fryers temperature control, I would readjust the temperature controls of the Fryer to compensate for the difference in the future. Iâve included pictures represent both probes in mid-cook and at the end. Notice the difference in temperatures. Given that the meat was close to medium rare, Iâd trust the MeatStick probe more. If weâd reduced the ambient temperature when we first saw the discrepancy, I think weâd have had even better results. One of the hardest things in cooking with a wireless thermometer is to learn to trust the probe â they work!
I bought this MeatStick set as an early Christmas present to myself. My first impressions when opening it, the case it comes with is nice. It looks like there are some empty slots if you purchase more MeatSticks. It comes with 2 thermometers. One has a completely black end and the other is black with 2 red rings around it so you can tell them apart (see pictures). When I had to charge it, I was surprised to see that it needed AA batteries to charge the thermometer instead of using a plug in USB cable. I ended up using some rechargeable AA batteries for this. At first I was annoyed at this setup but then I realized when you start a cook, you need to have the meatstick in the charger, hit the button, and then take it out of the charger to initialize it for a cook. So if you're outside preparing to do a long smoke and you're about to put the thermometer in, having the charger attached to an outlet and then going to fetch the thermometer from there is really inconvenient compared to a completely mobile charger. Setting up the wifi bridge was a breeze - the only thing I had to do was pick the wifi network to join, which was nice that the app actually asked. I use a separate network for my smart devices (just for that extra layer of separation). Other smart devices I've set up in the past just use whatever wifi network your phone was connected to without asking. I had no issues at all with the range no matter where I was in my house since I was using the wifi bridge. I had no issues at all with the range no matter where I was in my house since I was using the wifi bridge. I cooked ribeye steak 2 different times to make sure both sticks were working. I'm not sure how accurate the ambient temperature sensor is but the internal temperature is definitely accurate as it matched up to what my thermapen was telling me. I usually use my cast iron for steaks but this time around I opted to do reverse sears in my Matfer carbon steel pan. Since I have a toddler running around touching everything he can, this wireless thermometer was great in that I wouldn't have to open the oven to check the consistency of the steak and there were no wires for my little guy to pull. At 125 degrees internal temperature, I took the steaks out of the oven and put it on the stove top to sear it and baste it. All in all, really simple to use. No issues as of yet. Will try on something with a longer cook time next time around as reverse searing takes less than an hour.
I purchased this gift for my husband, who is an avid griller and chef. Weâve owned numerous meat thermometers over the years, but never one that is truly wireless. Set-up was fairly easy to set up, though getting it connected to the network took a few reboots, but once we got it set up, it worked flawlessly. The app, once connected, was incredibly intuitive, and helpful in both set up and use. Aside from the wireless functionality which allows you to see the exact temperature of your roast without opening the oven and losing heat every time you do so, the app offers so much more. In addition to the current temperature of meat, it tells you your ambient oven temperature (which if you are a serious baker or chef is not always accurate with the dial), the meat temperature, and the exact time in, and extra time needed to get to your desired level of doneness. My husband is a great chef to begin with but our leg of lamb came out at a perfect medium rare! Because you can leave the thermometer in even after itâs out, we were able to monitor the temperature of roast as it was resting and knew exactly when it was perfectly cooked. Also the wireless bridge means that on a slower longer roast or smoke, we can leave the house.
